The Polar Circle Marathon® is the world’s coolest full marathon in more than one sense:
Its location is just north of the Arctic Polar Circle, the course touching the 3
km thick permanent ice cap of Greenland and the grazing musk oxen are the only ones
to break the piercing silence.
Besides the part on the ice cap, the route will take participants pass enormous
glacier tongues and through moraine landscape, tundra and arctic dessert. And of
course, there is the cold weather and the slippery ice to take into consideration.
The foundation consists mainly of gravel road except for the part on the ice cap,
where spikes are attached to the participants’ running shoes to keep them from slipping.
From the start line in Kangerlussuaq marathoners head for the permanent ice cap
running between enormous glacier tongues. After the extremely demanding part on
the ice runners follow a different, scenic route through moraine plains, tundra
and artic desert and past 'Sugar Loaf’ (with a steep climb) back towards Kangerlussuaq.
Apart from the awe-inspiring Greenlandic wilderness, the backdrop of the physical
challenges consists of glacial lakes and waterfalls in the midst of endless quantities
of snow and ice. And there is a big chance to meet musk oxen and reindeer grazing
on the scattered vegetation along the route.
